Japanese encephalitis is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause swelling of the brain. Most people who catch it never feel unwell, but in those who become sick it can cause severe complications or death, and about half of those who survive are left with lasting brain or nerve damage. You can have the Japanese encephalitis vaccine at Your Community Pharmacy in Newport from age 5, with no appointment. It mainly concerns travellers to parts of Asia or Papua New Guinea and people living, working or holidaying in parts of regional NSW.

How the virus spreads

The virus reaches people only through mosquito bites. According to healthdirect, working with pigs, waterbirds or horses raises the chance of exposure, although those animals cannot pass it directly to people. It is long established in parts of Asia and the Torres Strait, and since 2022 cases have also occurred in mainland states, including NSW.

Symptoms, when they happen, usually start 5 to 15 days after the bite: fever, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, muscle weakness or seizures. Anyone with these signs after mosquito exposure needs urgent medical care; call 000 for a seizure.

Free Japanese encephalitis vaccine in NSW

NSW Health sets its own eligibility list for a state-funded vaccine. It is free for people aged 2 months or older who live or work in one of the listed local government areas, mostly in inland and northern NSW, and, until 31 January 2027, for people travelling to those areas for outdoor recreation such as camping, boating, hunting or fishing.

The Northern Beaches is not a listed area. Check the current list before your visit, because NSW Health updates it. Children under 5 who qualify should see their GP.

Japanese encephalitis vaccine for overseas trips

The Immunisation Handbook recommends the vaccine for travellers spending a month or more in endemic areas of Asia or Papua New Guinea during the transmission season. Shorter trips may still warrant it, for example travel in the wet season, rural or farming areas, camping, hiking or fishing, or staying somewhere without screens or bed nets. For travel it is a private cost.

It is often planned with other travel vaccines such as hepatitis A and B or rabies. Trips to parts of Africa or South America may also call for yellow fever protection from an approved clinic, and our blog covers pharmacist travel vaccines.

Doses and what to bring

Two brands of Japanese encephalitis vaccine are used in Australia. Imojev is a single dose, while JEspect needs two doses, so it calls for an earlier start before you travel. The pharmacist checks your health, any pregnancy and your immune system before advising which suits you. Bring photo ID, your Medicare card if you have one and your vaccination history.

Mosquito protection still matters

Vaccination works alongside bite prevention. Wear long, loose clothing, use a repellent containing DEET or picaridin, and take extra care around dawn and dusk. Ask us about repellents in store; if you have seen one cheaper, show us the lower price and ask the team about a price match. We also offer free delivery of pharmacy items (call to check your address).

Common questions

I live on the Northern Beaches. Is the vaccine free for me?

Not on the basis of a Newport or Northern Beaches address. You may still qualify if you work in, or are heading out to camp or fish in, a listed area.

How long before my trip should I come in?

As early as you can: at least 6 weeks, and preferably 12, before departure, which also leaves room for the two-dose brand.

Can I have other vaccines on the same day?

Often, yes. Tell the pharmacist everything planned for your trip so the order and timing of each vaccine can be worked out together.

Where can I see the other vaccines you give?

They are listed on our walk-in vaccinations page, and our health services page covers free checks and other services. You can also call or email us.
